HI! I'm Your Boring Blogger ;) & This Is Why I Love Boring

Confession: Writing a blog about copiers, printers and networks isn't the easiest thing in the world to make exceptionally interesting.  But I love what I do, and I think that telling you why gets to the bottom of what this company is about more than some technical article (technical articles will still abound, worry not!) 



My name is Emily. Most people don't know it, but I'm shy! Also, my finger is apparently stuck in mouse position. 

I'm a scientist and computer nerd. I love the internet more than is probably healthy and I am embarassingly passionate about my work. People usually think I'm joking when I get really excited about code and keywords. I absolutely love the people I work with, and this is the best job I have ever imagined I could have!


Here's why:

1. Boring people are awesome.

This is Tom. Tom is Boring. Tom is awesome. 

Tom Hubler is Boring's MPS (Managed Print Services) Manager.  Under Tom's management, Boring manages business printing operations for over 120 companies, and more than 3,000 devices (!). Small, medium, and large scale print operations keep these businesses running, and Tom makes it happen while saving them lots of money with our signature contract print services. 

Companies with MPS don't have to pay for toner, service, supplies, and all that is associated with printing as variable costs. They simply contract one fixed monthly fee based on print volume, and that's it. Toner is delivered when needed. Service is guaranteed. We fix it before it breaks :) Tom saves people time and money! 

When I started working for Boring, I had orientations with all the key staff. I was struck by how smart Tom is,  how dedicated he is to his work, and the value he provides for his customers. Tom said something to me that I loved, and I wrote it down. He said about what he does:


"It's boring, but I'm good at it."


I found this admission very endearing. What more worthy inspiration for doing one's best to serve in humility could there be? It's about doing what we do with heart.  Yes, we sell copiers and we manage networks; business isn't always a party and a half.  But that brings me to the second reason I love what we do...

3. we make things run more smoothly for businesses and business owners.

Boring, eliminating world suffering one service call at a time. 

One part of this job that makes me so happy is receiving the emails and cards from our customers who have taken the time to let us know how we went above an beyond to help them.  

One of our customers recently stopped our CEO at a restaurant downtown to tell him that we saved their operations by making things happen fast, and with no questions asked. What happened was this customer called one of our competitors, who had been providing the customer's copiers and service contracts. The customer told the provider that they would be cancelling the contract at the end of the term. 

What did our competitor do? They came the very next day and took back all of their copiers, leaving the customer without any way to run their business! So the customer called Boring, told us their situation, and we came the very next day with a set of brand new copiers set up and ready to go. This was before I worked here, but I hear stories like this every day from grateful customers.

Again, it's the personal touch  that makes the difference. Most of us have to go to work every day, whether we love our jobs or not. The least we ask is that things run smoothly and that we can be treated with kindness and consideration. That is the foundation of what Boring stands for.

Hands down the very best part about my job is the community relations part. Boring has been, since its inception in 1924, one of most philanthropic companies in the industry

This is Mr. Boring.  Mr. Boring gives back.

Don't mean to brag, but I think I have the best job in the whole world!  Because I get to coordinate the gracious efforts of Dean Boring, our President & CEO, to give back to our community. 

We support dozens of non-profit and community organizations in Central Florida, including the United Way of Central Florida, the Watson Clinic Foundation, Parker Street Ministries, Polk State College Foundation, Florida Southern College, Girls, Inc., the Lakeland Bar Association, Lakeland Sister Cities, Central Florida Speech & Hearing Center, the Polk County Sheriff’s Charities, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, VISTE, Polk P.E.A.C.E., the American Heart Association, the Lakeland Economic Development Council, and many more.

Our employees frequently organize and participate in fundraising and volunteer events, including food drives, toy drives, and 5k races. We encourage our employees to get involved in their communities outside of work, as well.  Many of our employees are active members of Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, and other civic clubs. Boring’s employees and managers have participated in Leadership Lakeland, Leadership Polk, Emerge Polk, Emerge Lakeland, the Lakeland Economic Development Council’s Summer Leadership Program, and other professional development programs in the area.

In the Tampa area, as we expand our community reach we are developing further initiatives with several non-profit community enrichment organizations, including Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa, Lowry Park Endowment Foundation, Metropolitan Ministries, and R.I.C.H. House which is a safe haven for the children of Sulphur Springs.  Our initiatives combine coordinated employee and community volunteer service, donations of equipment and services, and sponsorships of goods and events.
